MH 2020 Featured Client: Summitville Tiles

News
CLEVELAND – As part of McDonald Hopkins’ upcoming 90th anniversary in 2020, the business advisory and advocacy law firm is profiling some of its most successful and innovative clients. This month, the firm invites you to get to know Summitville Tiles, a 107-year-old family business that has reinvented itself over the years and thrived in an industry that has seen competitors perish and competition move overseas.

Since its beginnings in 1912 as Summit Brick Company, Summitville Tiles has evolved from a small producer of highway paving brick into a diversified producer of premium grade tile, brick, and installation and care products. The company is the only charter member of the tile industry’s national trade association to still be in business today and their products can be found everywhere from the rooftop of the White House to schools, fast food restaurants and commercial and institutional facilities all around the world.

Relationships and family have been an important part of the fabric and culture that binds the company together. It’s not uncommon to have three generations of the same family working at Summitville Tiles and the average length of employment at the company is 20 years.

“We recognize the enduring value of all the people who are critical to making us who we are,” says David Johnson, CEO.

Summitville Tiles’ relationship with McDonald Hopkins is another that has stood the test of time. For over 70 years McDonald Hopkins has played a pivotal role in devising strategies to help Summitville Tiles remain a family business and continue into the next generation. Johnson is proud of the longstanding relationship Summitville Tiles has with McDonald Hopkins and with so many customers and suppliers.

“They are like family. That is so rewarding for me—the longstanding relationships built on mutual respect,” says Johnson.
