Insight and resources on digital pathology from the Panel of National Pathology Leaders and McDonald Hopkins
As the utilization of AI and digital pathology systems increases in pathology labs and clinical laboratories across the country, we understand that clients need more resources to address the advantages, risks, and implementation of these cutting-edge solutions. We are pleased to share the following information on resources prepared by the Panel of National Pathology Leaders (PNPL) that offer insight and guidance on this critical topic.
The Panel of National Pathology Leaders – a non-profit think tank dedicated to advancing best practices in pathology and laboratory medicine – maintains a research focus group dedicated to providing guidance and insight on digital pathology and AI.
In addition to developing practical-use documents and templates that will enable pathology practices and laboratories of all sizes to make the business case for incorporating and implementing digital pathology, the PNPL research group has hosted two educational webinars on the topic that explain how the use of digital pathology systems will change current pathology workflows, as well as the basics of machine learning related to pathology. The webinars provide a thorough introduction to digital pathology systems for those who want a solid foundation and are available at no cost using the links below:
- "Digital Pathology From A to Z for Beginners" - This presentation by Dr. Matthew Hanna, Director of Digital Pathology Informatics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, covers the nuts and bolts for topics related to digital pathology systems for those who want a solid foundation.
- "How Digital Pathology Can Improve Your Laboratory" - This second presentation by Dr. Hanna explains how the use of digital pathology systems will change current pathology workflows, as well as the basics of machine learning related to pathology.
The Chair of PNPL's Digital Pathology & AI Focus Group, Dr. Raj C. Dash, Director of Lab Informatics Strategy at Duke University, was interviewed last fall for an article in G2 Intelligence titled: “AI and Digital Pathology: Progress and Potential Pitfalls.” In the article. Dr. Dash discusses recent developments in AI and digital pathology, as well as associated challenges and potential solutions around what pathologists and other lab professionals can do to prepare for bringing these technologies into their labs.

PNPL was organized in March 2019 by Robert Tessier of HBP Services Inc., with the support of McDonald Hopkins as a co-organizer. McDonald Hopkins continues to provide support to PNPL, with Elizabeth Sullivan, Chair of McDonald Hopkins' national Healthcare Practice Group, along with Emily Johnson, a Member of the national Healthcare Practice Group, and Patrick Campbell, an Associate in the national Healthcare Practice Group, providing educational content and thought leadership to PNPL. Elizabeth Sullivan also serves as a PNPL Panelist.
