McDonald Hopkins welcomes data privacy and cybersecurity attorney Walter Deering
McDonald Hopkins is proud to welcome attorney Walter Deering. Walter is an Associate in the Litigation Department and the national Data Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice Group. His practice focuses on incident response, regulatory defense, and privacy litigation.
“I am thrilled to join McDonald Hopkins. The reputable client work and collaborative culture made it a destination firm for me and an easy choice where I wanted to grow my practice,” he said.
Prior to joining McDonald Hopkins, Walter litigated and defended cybersecurity matters involving a range of complex issues, including insurance coverage disputes, recovery actions, and third-party lawsuits in federal and state courts throughout the United States, including data breach class action lawsuits. He also advised organizations and Fortune 500 companies across a variety of industries on high-stakes cybersecurity incidents and coverage matters, including ransomware attacks, business email compromises, and third-party data breaches.
In addition, he previously defended academic healthcare institutions in high-exposure litigation involving complex factual and legal issues, and litigated general liability claims.
During law school, Walter served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Sue E. Myerscough of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois and was a teaching assistant for legal writing classes.
“Walter’s experience handling complex cybersecurity incidents and litigation further strengthens our ability to guide clients through today’s evolving data privacy and cybersecurity challenges,” said Dominic Paluzzi, co-chair of McDonald Hopkins’ Data Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice Group.
He received a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law, where he was a member and Admissions Editor for the Illinois Law Review. During his undergraduate studies, he earned a B.A. from the University of Illinois at Springfield in Political Science and Communication.
