Frank Wardega, a Member in the Mergers and Acquisitions Practice Group, recently wrote an article for Crain's Cleveland Business regarding the correct time to sell a business, called  "Timing exit process requires informed strategic planning."

I often tell clients they should consider exploring a sale while they still love what they do versus when they are near their wits’ end. Most buyers, particularly financial buyers, will want a commitment from management, at a minimum a consulting or transition services type arrangement or potentially up to a multi-year employment agreement. From a performance perspective, it is generally a “good” time to explore a sale if you also are in a period of recent, sustainable growth. If you have had sustainable material growth in the profitability of the business, it might be worth starting with a valuation.
